Toastmasters Humorous Speech Contest – 2008 Gold Medal, District 59 – John Zimmer


Speech Title: “Pay Attention!”. This speech took 1st place at the District 59 Humorous Speech Contest in Bamberg, Germany on 15 November 2008. The contest took place in front of approximately 250 people, and featured the top speakers from Toastmasters clubs in 18 countries in Continental Europe. I had a lot of fun doing this speech, especially because it gave me a great opportunity to poke some good-natured fun at Toastmasters, which is a terrific organization. 2011 Dallas Winning Speech: 19th Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition — Elijah English


Elijah English, who aims to be the youngest president of the US, delivers his winning speech at the 19th Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition on Friday, Jan. 14 in Dallas. In his speech, he said it’s “…your attitude not your aptitude that determines your altitude.” This year’s topic, which brought forth speeches ripe with hope and ambition, addressed the question, “How will you carry forward the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in your personal and professional life?” Presented in Dallas and Houston by the Texas-based law firm Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP, the competition commemorates the life of Dr. King and is designed to highlight the cultural diversity of the community while recognizing and encouraging the writing and presentation skills of elementary school students.

Toastmasters Humorous Speech Contest – 2009 Gold Medal, District 59 – John Zimmer


Speech Title: “A Way Out”. This speech took 1st place at the District 59 Humorous Speech Contest in Hamburg, Germany on 21 November 2009. The contest took place in front of approximately 300 people, and featured the top speakers from Toastmasters clubs in 18 countries in Continental Europe. This is probably some of the best fun that I have ever had on stage. The audience was terrific and I felt right at home. Big thanks to my daughter Kristen for pushing me to come up with an idea for the contest. Thanks also to Matt Viel, my Toastmasters buddy in the Netherlands, for taking the video.
